RECREATION/EVENTS
Hummelstown residents can partake in several recreational opportunities in and around town. For history buffs, the Hummelstown Historical Society offers both a museum and visitor center, and the historic Warwick Hotel still presents pre-Revolutionary War details, while the nearby Indian Echo Caverns give a glimpse into the Native American homestead before they disappeared in the late 1600s. With four town parks, including Schaffner, Mehaffie and Alexander Park, along with Hummel Nature Trail, Hummelstown residents can utilize the sports fields, playground, hiking trails or picnic grounds.
Hummelstown hosts several events year round for the active populace. A Taste of Hummelstown is an annual event that features local restaurants faire. Schaffner Park features summertime Movies in the Park; the Fuzzy Few Organization’s Annual Carnival which features rides, food, games and live entertainment; and the Annual Arts and Crafts Festival. The borough also hosts the Halloween Parade in October and the Lollipop Drop and fireworks display on New Years Eve.
EDUCATION
Hummelstown is part of the Lower Dauphin School District. Students attend Nye Elementary School, Lower Dauphin Middle School and Lower Dauphin High School. The school district’s administrative building is also located in Hummelstown. For higher education, Hummelstown is within a thirty-minute drive from several colleges and educational institutions such as Harrisburg Area Community College (HACC), Lebanon Valley College (LVC), Penn State - Harrisburg, Kepler Career Institute, and VoTech.
ECONOMY/JOB MARKET
As the metropolitan center for nearly 400 nearby communities, the economy is based on service related industries, healthcare and a growing technological industry. The largest employers in the area include state government, Highmark Blue Shield, Tyco Electronics Corp., Hershey Medical Center and County of Dauphin, to name a few. A large portion of the population in Hummelstown is employed in Derry Township, through the Hershey Chocolate Factory or Hershey’s Food Company and their subsidiaries and properties.
